Metamorphosing identities : Dominicans in New Jersey

This essay engages Dominicans in New Jersey to explore and highlight areas that remain obscure and neglected in the study of the transnational experience of this population in general. In particular, the essay pays attention to the experience of young Dominican immigrants and Dominican Americans, whose live relation to Dominican identity is markedly different from that of their immigrant parents and older generations of immigrants. After providing an initial overview of Dominicans in New Jersey through a discussion of statistical data and press coverage, the essay uses interview materials with young men and women of this population to highlight where they locate and feel dominicanidad: in language use and its affective dimensions as well as in other expressive and cultural practices (eating, dancing) that take place within family and other kin networks. These locations for feeling and identification with Dominican identity challenge us to appreciate better just how different being Dominican looks when seen by some of the young people with whom I spoke.Este ensayo desarrolla la categoría de “Dominicanos en Nueva Jersey” para explorar y enfocar áreas que todavía quedan opacas y descuidadas en el estudio sobre la experiencia transnacional de esta población. En particular, este ensayo presta atención a la experiencia de los jóvenes inmigrantes dominicanos y los domínico-americanos, cuya relación vivida con la identidad dominicana es marcadamente diferente de la de sus padres inmigrantes y de la de generaciones anteriores de inmigrantes. Tras proveer un resumen de la condición de los dominicanos en Nueva Jersey a través de datos estadísticos y de cobertura en la prensa, este ensayo utiliza entrevistas con jóvenes de esta población para enfocar dónde ellos/as localizan y sienten la dominicanidad: en las prácticas lingüísticas y sus dimensiones afectivas, al igual que en otras prácticas expresivas y culturales (la comida, el baile) que tienen lugar en un ambiente familiar y de otros parentescos. Estos locales para el sentir y la identificación con la identidad dominicana nos retan a apreciar mejor lo diferente que los jóvenes con los que los que hablé siente el ser dominicano

D-Region VLF Monitoring System

The use of VLF signals to monitor the changes that occur in the ionosphere resulting from solar variability, has helped to understand how different ionospheric layers depend upon the Sun. These different ionospheric layer responses play a significant role in determining space weather impacts. Our system was created to be a permanent monitor to study the effects on the D-region of the ionosphere and explore any major impacts due to sun radiation exposure. The use of inexpensive equipment proved to be effective and the key point in the creation of this system

Este artículo presenta el diseño y construcción de un vehículo didáctico guiado automáticamente por medio de una aplicación de un dispositivo móvil como plataforma experimental que permita al alumno la fácil evaluación de algoritmos de movimiento y la mejora de su desempeño para el recorrido de trayectorias en condiciones no–holonómicas. El vehículo es de tres grados de libertad, de accionamiento diferencial, con dos llantas montadas en un eje común y movidas separadamente por dos motores. El campo de aplicación de esta plataforma está enfocado al aprendizaje basado en la práctica del control guiado a distancia por medio de la conectividad y la comunicación entre dos dispositivos

Plataforma didáctica para robótica articulada por medio de una interfaz gráfica

Este artículo expone el desarrollo de una plataforma robótica didáctica. El propósito de la plataforma es realizar trabajos experimentales que permitan la ejecución y evaluación de tareas específicas relacionadas con la cinemática y control de movimiento de las articulaciones de un mecanismo robótico. Un elemento básico de la plataforma es el brazo robótico xArm-1s del fabricante Hiwonder, el cual posee una estructura articulada con seis servomotores y una tarjeta propia para su control mediante una tarjeta Arduino. Los estados de movimiento se monitorean por medio de una interfaz gráfica desarrollada en Matlab que permite el manejo de las variables utilizadas. La plataforma está dirigida a la enseñanza como una herramienta experimental que permita el análisis y compresión de cada concepto de la cinemática de la robótica articulada

A Review of Deep Learning Fundamentals – the XOR Neural Network Model

This paper explores the fundamentals of Deep Learning by searching a simple Neural Network model of the XOR function for the forward and backward signals flowing through this model. Our purpose is to reach a deeper understanding of some outstanding concepts of Deep Learning, which would enable us to get the significance of it while the Neural Network model of the XOR function is trained by the backpropagation algorithm. The chosen Neural Network model contains just one hidden layer with four neurons and an output layer with one neuron. Although this model is not a deep neural network, its hidden layer carries the enough concepts of Deep Learning. The sigmoid is used as the activation function in all neurons. A derivation of a simple version of the Stochastic Gradient Descent algorithm is presented, which is used to minimize the output error, and then by backpropagating it we come to the backpropagation algorithm. Numerical results are presented, which shows the convergence of the output error and that of a selected weight and their analysis summarize the understanding of the fundamental concepts of Deep Learning

La violencia y las escenas cotidianas de convertirse en un hombre

This essay turns to quotidian negotiations of homophobia within an immigrant group of self-identified gay and bisexual men to stress how the construction and sustenance of male privilege and of the very contours of the male subject require vigilance and careful policing of all presumably male bodies regardless of their sexual orientations. Based on an analysis of retrospective life history interviews with Dominican gay and bisexual immigrant men conducted between 2001 and 2002, I will propose what is at stake in quotidian exchanges among the participants is the fastidious work of calibrating the male body to signify “maleness” properly. By drawing attention to the micro-politics of masculine becoming, the essay suggests that attention to recent instances of homophobic violence should be considered as part of larger and chronic patterns of the aggressive policing of the male body in the social. By looking at the continuing power that homophobia has to structure gay male networks, the essay also challenges us to consider how patterns of marginalization continue to be reproduced even among the groupings most directly disadvantaged by them.Este ensayo se dirige a las negociaciones cotidianas de la homofobia dentro de un grupo de inmigrantes de hombres auto-identificados como gays y bisexuales para resaltar cómo la construcción y el mantenimiento de los privilegios masculinos y de los mismos contornos del sujeto masculino requieren vigilancia y cuidado de todos los cuerpos policiales supuestamente masculinos independientemente de sus orientaciones sexuales. Basándose en un análisis retrospectivo de la historia de vida de gays y bisexaules dominicanos inmigrantes llevadas a cabo entre 2001 y 2002, propongo que está en juego en los intercambios cotidianos entre los participantes el trabajo exigente de la calibración del cuerpo masculino para significar "masculinidad" adecuadamente. Al llamar la atención a las micro-políticas del devenir masculino, el ensayo sugiere que la atención a los recientes casos de violencia contra homosexuales debe ser considerada como parte de los patrones más grandes y crónicas de la actuación policial agresiva del cuerpo masculino en lo social. Al observar el poder constante que la homofobia tiene que estructurar redes masculinas gay, el ensayo también nos desafía a considerar cómo patrones de marginación se siguen reproduciendo incluso entre los grupos más directamente perjudicados por ellos
